I and other teammates joined Jakarta Service Jam 2020 held by Somia in a group consists of 4 participants. It was a workshop where many groups in Indonesia joined via online meeting in 3 days due to COVID-19 situation. We were given real study case and try to solve it then present in front of Somia team and other groups.

Dolan is a mobile application that will help user to play together Indonesian traditional games online in facing COVID-19 situation.This includes playing together, chatting with participants, leaderboard, and game options

Goal: Making service that helps people spend quality times with friend while still preventing COVID-19 from spreading.


Phases

In strengthening case background, the project consists of research and designing, ranging from brainstorming to improvement.


User Research

In brainstorming, we defined user target which are varied in order to ensure the prototype and values reach inclusivity of the population's need of entertainment during COVID-19. We then interviewed 5 respondents to gather their needs and problems.


After gathering user's needs, problems, and their current solutions, we categorized their answers and concluded that the main problems of being in the COVID-19 situation are less expression, less activities, and communication barrier.


Ideation

We then made How Might We? possible solutions for each problem, and find inspirations for indonesian traditional games and existing entertainment app (Hago)


After discussed, we decided to make a prototype of entertainment and games app that can be played online together. There are many Indonesian traditional games that usually played offline such as Karaoke, Tepok Nyamuk, jempol, Truth or Dare, Kotak Pos, and Dance. The user can also interact with each other player via chat, voice, or video.


We chose Dolan as the name of the app as it come from Javanese language. Dolan means play in Javanese and it sounds very humble so that the name is very inclusive. The unique value of Dolan is ‘The traditional games together, which are usually offline, have become online’

Evaluation / Testing

We did concept testing to different 9 respondents with the same background as brainstorming and research phase. We shared the prototype Figma link and they use the flow by clicking their phone screen and share their thoughts on how to improve the experience. Most respondents point out there are two points that are need to be improved, such as more game options and peer-group play scheme.

Lesson Learned

I learned so much from this worldwide workshop from Somia. Although the project completed in two days, but I and my team also got feedbacks from experts after pitching and best practices from their speeches. The sessions focused on user research and creativity so that we know the problem can be solved with other kind of solutions, not only an app. This prototype may has weakness so it needs to be improved on detailing the flows on

  • Detailing the flows on how users will invite their peer group

  • Adding more memorable activities or games

  • Make the high fidelity prototype after completing user flow so Dolan has a branding guideline
